Newt sp.

I dug a pond last autumn and was thrilled to find newts in it last week - I assume this is a Smooth Newt but wondered if it might be a female Palmate. Can anyone help?

Apparently 'Adult females are difficult to distinguish from female Smooth Newts, the best way to tell them apart is the fact that the throat of the Smooth Newt is spotted and that of the Palmate newt is plain pink or yellow.'

And Froglife says: 'Can be difficult to distinguish from Smooth Newts; is not uncommon in garden ponds.
UK: Widespread and common in Scotland and Wales with a patchy distribution in England . They are rare/absent in the Midlands and East Anglia.'
